Letter of Recommendation for Gary Moore

I am writing to wholeheartedly recommend Gary Moore for the position of full-time or interim pastor. I have known Gary for almost two years through his work as interim pastor at Grace Community Church (GCC) in Marblehead, MA. His positive impact on the church and its members has been profound and his personal and professional qualities recommend him for any such position of trust and leadership in Christ’s church.

Gary took over as interim pastor at a very difficult juncture for GCC. A disagreement between a prominent elder and our long-term pastor resulted in a block of the membership associated with the elder leaving the church and our pastor subsequently retiring. Those remaining at GCC were unhappy and somewhat directionless. The budget was bleeding cash and the financial situation untenable; as the church’s then newly appointed treasurer, I was acutely aware of this problem.

Gary’s personal leadership, his work with the remaining elders, his outstanding expository preaching from the Bible, and his outgoing personality all came together to “right the ship” at GCC. Membership and church attendance stabilized and then began to grow again. The elders were re-energized and hopeful. The budget stabilized and then moved into surplus.

Gary also was a vital part of our search process for a new full-time pastor at GCC, although he did not serve on the committee. He was scrupulous to resist any attempts to elevate him from interim to full-time pastor. As a search committee member myself, I can attest that Gary was extremely helpful in helping us organize our search and guide us through the process, but was careful never to interfere or drive the search. The search ended successfully and our new pastor has been called.

Gary is the best “preacher” whom I have ever had the privilege to hear on a regular basis. His experience, his deep knowledge of Scripture, and his love of God’s Word and God’s people shines through. I wish my words could even to a small extent convey the power and insights delivered in his sermons.

Gary is a motivator and a natural leader. He is one of the few people I know who could get me to attend a weekly 6:00 am men’s Bible study. He succeeded where others have failed and our study of Packer’s Knowing God has had a profound impact on my life and others with whom I have subsequently shared it. My spiritual growth over the past two years is in no small part due to my association with Gary.

I would be pleased to discuss Gary. My e-mail address is lance.james@rbc.com .

Sincerely yours,
Lance F. James, Managing Director, RBC Global Asset Management (U.S.)
